Pinotage

Southern Right is redefining Pinotage with this intense, classically styled wine, expressing a variety of ancient soils and packed with complex berry fruit, beautiful tannins and subtle spice. Full ripeness at lower alcohol and the longer hang-time afforded by cooler more marginal sites, combined with the complex, more classic fruit aromas and structure, resulting from both granitic and clay-rich soil, make this wine a highly individual expression of South Africa’s unique grape variety.

Growing Season

The timing of our 2022 harvest was similar to 2021, but a touch later than average, and our average of the maximum temperatures for the 4 crucial months leading up to and during harvest was 25.18 centigrade, higher than our long-term average of 24.63 centigrade and higher than 2021. While ripening was slow and extended, harvest was fortunately complete before the first rains in early March. The preceding Winter was our wettest in 24 years and was followed by a slightly wetter than average bud break to veraison period, but with an unusually (and usefully) dry September facilitating healthy, even budding. Apart from cold, wet, early season clay-rich soils inhibiting shoot growth, and a few late season heat spikes creating the potential for sunburn, the vintage proceeded smoothly and delivered beautiful, pure, generously textured wines. Yields, as always, were extremely low.

92 Points - Tim Atkin MW South Africa 2023 Report

92 Tim Atkin MW South Africa 2023 Report

Southern Right is now a blend of Walker Bay and 30% Swartland grapes, a change that has given the wine more concentration and tannic backbone. Curated in 14% new wood, this is sappy, savoury and floral, with bramble and black cherry fruit and perfume to spare.

90 Wine Enthusiast, Jesica Vargas, September 2024

The nose of this wine is subtle, but the palate is generous. It has aromas of peppercorn and berries and flavors of blackcurrant and other dark fruit. Excellent acidity and fine tannins provide energy and structure to this lively red.

Red Wagon Rochester, August 2024

You guys are doing amazing work. The Southern Right and Ashbourne Pinotage wines brought me back to the category after I had all but given up on that grape. Now I love it, and that is largely due to what you have done ... cheers to you!
