Sauvignon blanc

Made in a way ensuring the personality of site and soil is not over-ridden by the forceful character of the variety, this wine exhibits the typical Southern Right balance of tight "Old World" minerality and length with hints of "New World” texture and body. The 2026 is a wine that favours individuality, minerality and palate complexity ahead of simple, pungent varietal aroma. A significant percentage of fruit from iron and clay-rich soil (47%) has added a textural and structural component and additional overall complexity to this wine. Granitic soils (33%) have added openness and perfume, while sandstone soils (20%) have contributed their typical bright, tensile character and a marked, saline minerality. This is Sauvignon blanc as fine wine, not Sauvignon blanc as simply a varietal expression.

Growing Season

Good winter rains saturated the soils and filled the dams, while significant chill units ensured healthy dormancy. A warmer than usual late winter afforded timely and even budding. Veraison started earlier than usual in mid-December. Excellent canopy growth and higher than usual fertility resulted in very good yields of healthy grapes with high acidity and low pH’s. 2026 was warmer than 2024 and 2025, at an average of the maximum temperatures for Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar of 26.20 Centigrade, versus 25.35 for 2025 and 25.05 for 2024. Overall 2026 was a large and early harvest starting in the last week of January and finishing almost entirely by the end of February, except for a small amount of Pinotage in early March, serendipitously just before a cold front moved in.

Neal Martin, September 2026

The 2026 Sauvignon Blanc comes from 30 parcels and stays four months on the fine lees, with 18% going through a wild ferment. It has a pretty nose with wild peach and orange blossom scents. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity and attractive texture, a little peachy in style with a harmonious, slightly Chardonnay-like finish. A crowd pleaser in the positive sense of that expression.
