Southern Right is much more than a cool climate Pinotage. A crucial contributor to its unusually classic styling is our choice of extremely clay-rich shale derived soils for our plantings. This, combined with very careful yield management and tight-grained French oak barrels specially tailored for Pinotage by our coopers, produces a wine which is very different to general South African Pinotage. In fact very few people in blind tastings ever pick up the variety. Our Pinotage is usually confused with something from the Rhone or the South of France.

Our alcohol levels are significantly lower than usual for South African Pinotage – 13.47% for our 2011. Our acids are usually higher – 6.2g/l for our 2011 and our yields are significantly lower than usual – 38.78 hl/ha for our 2011.

Over the years we have been a Best New World Red in Decanter Magazine, we have been rated one of the 38 most interesting wines from around the world, we have achieved the highest score for Pinotage to date in The Wine Spectator and one of their “most exciting new wines”, we have been top of the Pinotage category in WINE Magazine, and we have been wine of the day for Detroit News.

These are some of the flavours and characters tasters around the world have found in different vintages of Southern Right Pinotage: “delicious plum and fruit cake”; “genuine complexity”; “black cherry”; “savoury tapenade”; “layers of raspberry and plum fruit”; “black current”; “roasted sage and bramble”; ‘lingering minerally spine”; “lovely lingering perfume”; “crushed raspberry”; “dark fruit aromas”; “seasoned with a little spice”; “subtle minerality”; “soil driven flavours of raspberry, blackberry and spices”; “crushed violets”; “brambly fruit and sweet spice”; “a long mouthwatering finish which unfolds with each sip”.

“Southern Right takes Pinotage, the signature red wine of South Africa, and puts it on a pedestal. This is like French Burgundy with spice, herbs and dried cranberries thrown in”Detroit News

Our founding mission at Southern Right was to “redefine Pinotage” and we will keep doing everything we can to earn deep respect for this amazing South African grape variety.

All the best and thank you for your support of our wines!

Regards,

Anthony
